A Presentation About the Weaving Room @ Crossnore School

Caroline Hatchell, Asst. Manager of the Weaving Room will be on hand to tell us all about Crossnore's mission and its weaving. She will have a variety of wearables and housewares from the Weaving Room with her for sale, cash or card.

Crossnore Weavers, located on the Avery campus, was created to preserve the Appalachian art of hand-weaving, to give an economic opportunity to women, and to promote Crossnore Communities for Children through the sale of beautiful hand-woven goods all over the world.

Crossnore Weavers was founded in 1913 by Dr. Mary Martin Sloop. Sharing space with Crosnore’s Fine Arts Gallery, the Weaving Room is a living museum, highlighting decades of history. Exhibits include a timeline, photographs and history, and weaving samples. Special displays celebrate “Women of the Weaving Room” and the Weaving Room’s central figures, Mrs. Newbern Johnson and Ossie Phillips.

The mission of the Heritage Arts Program is to promote connection and awareness through community engagement, while nurturing the strong historical and educational connection of Crossnore to the community. The Heritage Arts Program offers a series of arts focused workshops to the public to preserve Appalachian Mountain Weaving and introduce students to new art techniques.

Adding images to weaving has always been a fascination for many weavers. Through examples and a Power Point presentation, we will explore transparent weavings, with a shorter survey of Theo Moorman. technique. Both provide a way to place images on cloth.

Cheryl has been weaving for almost 50 years with a strong emphasis on "useful" cloth. Research has provided a link to her weaving ancestors in Norwich, England, and historical drafts are her current area of focus. She markets her woven garments and home accessories through her label "Shepherds Delight" and is a co-owner of Georgia Yarn Company. Cheryl teaches and shares with her guild, and through workshops and classes at her studio.

We need volunteers in each of the 2 hour shifts.

There is no limit to the number of volunteers, but we need at least 3 per shift.

There are many other activities going on, so if you are not needed, there will be other fiber related things to explore.

Weft ikat provides a way of working with ikat that can be controlled or spontaneous. In this class on Day One, the class will be held at Local Cloth Studios in Asheville, Students will tie and dye simple ikat resists onto their weft yarn using cold water fiber reactive dyes. Days two and Three will be held at Johnson Farm where using a variety of techniques, students will line up or shift these patterns as they weave to motifs resembling flames, waves, or clouds that travel across the fabric and can bend and curve. Looms will be threaded in advance. A discussion of warp ikat tying will be part of the class as well as historical images.

About: Beth Ross Johnson is a weaver, teacher and workshop leader living in Black Mountain, North Carolina. She grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and when she became interested in weaving and textile arts, learned initially from students from Norman Kennedy, later studying with him for many workshops. A lifelong fascination with Asian art led to an interest in Japanese textiles and she has had two extensive stays in Japan to study kasuri (ikat weaving and dyeing) and sakiori (rag weaving) with master weavers there. Other avenues of exploration have been sashiko stitching and nyoho-e (Zen stitching). Recent studies have been in the ikat traditions of Europe, influenced by the 18th century wave of Orientalism on the continent, and woven structures like sashiko-ori and kasuri-ori that mimc hand stitching and ikat processes. The craft schools, weather, and music compelled a move to western North Carolina in 1980 where she has worked a number of arts related jobs (including in environmental and craft preservation in Cherokee) while maintaining a studio and teaching in formal and informal institutions. She is now weaving and teaching full-time and is co-authoring a book on Sashiko-ori.

Workshop

Ability level: Students should be able to warp their own looms

Loom Requirements: 4 shaft floor or table loom. Not for rigid heddle looms

Location

Friday- Local Cloth in Asheville

Saturday-Sunday- Johnson Farm

Participants will provide:

A warped floor or table loom (not for rigid heddle)

Width: 10" W

Length: 3 1/2 yards

EPI: 16

Warp Yarns: 8/2 or 10/2 navy or other dark color cotton yarn

We will be dyeing with a navy dye so you can have a warp in that color or not. Beautiful

effects can be obtained with burgundy, dark teal, rust, colored warps.

Weft Yarns: Mercerized cotton 8/2 or 10/2 natural or white on cones or balls.

Bring some light or dark colors of the same weight to mix into weaving if you have them.

At least two boat shuttles with bobbins.

A plastic bag (for dyeing day)

Bobbin winder if you have one (we can share)

Scissors or snips that you are willing cut plastic tape with

Graph paper notebook, pen or pencil

Fabric marker- water soluble

Ruler

Lunch, drinks, snacks as desired. (No lunch provided)

Instructor brings:

Kasuri tape for tying

Tying pegs and some clamps for workshop use

Handouts

Dyes, chemicals

The Gentle Art of Tatting Lace

This program will introduce tatting, giving a brief history, examining the materials used and how they have changed over time. Additionally participants will learn to create the basic stitches as rings and chains. Supplies will be provided and visual media shared.

Sally Biggers began tatting in the mid-1970's learning from books and publications. Charles Kuralt's "On The Road Segment" in the late '70's inspired her and more crafters to take up and preserve this fiber art. The advent of the Internet helped her and others to make both connections and find patterns. She has created many tatted items, been part of tatting groups including coordinating one in Black Mountain for more than 10 years, taught tatting in its various forms, designed original patterns, interpreted patterns both old and new and participated in conferences around North America. She works with an on-line international community of tatters to creatively put tatting into a global perspective.

The presentation will explain the eco-printing process, a trunk show of fabric samples showing results of different combinations of technique and mordants as well as finished products using eco-printed fabric.

Denise is a life long garment sewer that has expanded into naturally dyeing and printing the fabric she uses.

Donations for the WNCFHG booth at the Anything Fiber sale may be received anytime from July 1-July 22.

If you are not able to hold onto your donations until then, please donate them to another local charity like Local Cloth to help artists who suffered losses to Helene.

The Anything Fiber Sale is a yard sale for fiber people. We all have piles of unloved fabric, "bought it because it was pretty" yarns, obscure tools that we forgot we had, looms that need a new home, duplicates of knitting needles, fleece that doesn't seem to get spun, right?

So, really clean out that closet of your surplus yarns, spinning fibers, materials and tools, and donate them to the Guild! No finished goods unless they are appropriate to use in other fiber techniques (i.e., hand-spun yarns, dyed yardage). No rotted or smelly fibers, please!

Bring donations to the July meeting. Or you can leave your donation in the designated boxes on the large covered porch at 103 Campbell Drive, Flat Rock, NC 28-731, or contact Cheryl Motheral-Lynn (phone 919-600-1531). Andrea Croskery (828-565-1396) in Haywood County, will also accept donations.

Pick up can also be arranged depending on the location.

Location: AB Tech's spacious Conference Center

The Mission Health/AB Tech Conference Center is located at 16 Fernihurst Drive, off Victoria Drive on AB Tech's Asheville Campus. There is a Fire/Loading Zone as you approach the building and there is access from the parking garage behind the building. Access is all on one level (unless you are parked upstairs and then there is an elevator.)

Claudia has enjoyed a life-long love of fiber and fabric, She has made clothing, costumes, toys and made alterations since her teens. She also put her hand to embroidery, beading, appliqué, needlepoint and macramé. Her current love is working with wool. She makes an assortment of felted critters and paints with wool, (pictures to frame). Claudia has been sharing her love of wool with other fiber lovers for the past 6 years. She especially loves to teach beginner needle felting. In her class you will leave with a finished creation and a new addiction!

Dede will take us through common native plants that contain dye, when to gather them and how to use them.

About Dede Styles: Put together being raised by a mother who taught me all about native plants, a pet sheep for fiber and a grandmother who was a weaver in the Southern Highlands Craft Guild, and you come up with someone who had to give natural dye a try. After the first dye bath of Queen Anne's Lace I was hooked.

Double two-tie (D2T) threadings* are incredibly versatile, offering the ability to weave a variety of different structures which can be used in block designs, color play, and texture, on fewer shafts.

About the Instructor: Linda Schultz has been weaving for over fifty years. She is particularly interested in exploring different weave structures and the interplay of color and structure. She has taught classes and written articles in order to share her discoveries.

About this Workshop:

Ability level: Advanced beginner or intermediate.

Must be able to: Dress a loom

Read and follow a weaving draft, including using a liftplan

Familiar with block weaves and profile drafts

Optional but helpful - familiar with using weaving software

Loom Requirements:

8 shaft loom

Historic Johnson Farm, Hendersonville. NC

Participants will provide:

Pre-warped 8 shaft loom. Shuttles, weft yarn, scissors, tape measure, notebook, pencil and any other materials needed for weaving.

Optional items: Participants may also bring a laptop with weaving software - Fiberworks for Mac will be used for demonstrations and can be downloaded and used for free on Mac or Windows.

Lunch, drinks, snacks as desired. (No lunch provided)

Instructor will supply:

Instructions for preparing looms, PDF handouts, wifs/drafts.

Additional Cost:

$5 Payable to the instructor on the first day of the workshop (cash or check).
