Sashiko refers to several Japanese styles of hand stitching used to reinforce, repair, or embellish textiles. The linear designs of the hitomezashi style are easily adaptable to the woven structure and these and woven structures based on other styles of sashiko are called Sashiko Ori. These patterns have a lot to offer handweavers to explore. Learn a little about the history of sashiko and sashiko ori in Japan and from other parts of the world, and get a start on designing your own patterns for the March workshop.

Beth Ross Johnson began weaving in 1970 and quickly shifted her interest to kasuri. She has had two extensive stays in Japan to work in kasuri  and sakiori. Her recent passion is sashiko ori. Beth teaches regularly at the John C. Campbell Folk School and Penland and maintains a studio in Black Mountain.
